What To Do If Your Kid Eats Your Edibles

First things first, you are not a bad parent. Take a deep breath. Breathe. Your kid is going to be ok!

Your worst nightmare is accidentally harming your child. While no child has ever died from ingesting cannabis, it is terrifying for a parent regardless.

If you are reading this and your little one hasn’t eaten your edibles, we strongly advise reviewing our other article on how to safely store your cannabis to ensure it is kid and pet friendly to make sure it never happens!

If you are reading this and your kid has ingested your edibles, once again, take a deep breath. Stay calm. And follow our five tips for what to do if your kid eats your edibles.

Steps To Take If Your Child Ingests Edibles

Don’t Panic

I know that sounds difficult, but it is important that you stay calm so as not to scare your kid. You may understand what they have eaten, but they don’t. Your child will think they have found a secret stash of cookies or gummies, and won’t understand that they were infused. The best first step you can take is to relax, and remind yourself that your child will be ok.

Keep Them Comfy

If you’ve ever had a friend green out, then you probably know the steps to take when they are too high. Your kid will want the same things things- yummy food, liquids, cozy blankets and lots of cuddles. Make them comfortable either on the couch or the floor and consider putting a movie on to keep them relaxed. It is ok if they want to sleep as long as you can still wake them; the edibles will likely make them quite drowsy!

Monitor Them Closely

Grab a notepad and pen to jot down any of their symptoms and the time at which they’re happening. If you know what and how much they ingested, write that down, too. Keep a close eye on them and take notes as things change.

Call Poison Control

Remember to relax. Poison Control is not going to judge you because your child got into your edibles. They are merely there to help you and will walk through a risk assessment to determine if you can stay at home or if you should take your child to the ER.

If your child is having difficulty breathing at any time, you should go to the ER immediately. Additionally, if they have fallen asleep and you are unable to wake them, time to go to the ER.

The number for BC Poison Control is (604) 682-5050.

If You Go To The ER

Take another deep breath. The doctors and nurses are not going to judge you either. The most common cases of poisoning involve ingesting household cleaners, painkillers, and grandparents’ medications. Accidents happen. Be sure to bring your notes from earlier in the day and share them with the doctor. Be up front and honest about what your child ingested, what symptoms they have been experiencing and their medical history.

Your child will be held for observation for quite a few hours until the cannabis wears off, which can be upwards of 12 hours. They will likely give your kid oxygen and keep them comfy while the effects wear off.

Preventative Measures So There’s No “Next Time”

If your kid ate your edibles, it was an accident. But, it is now up to you to make sure it never happens again. Take a peek at our top four tips on how to safely store your edibles to keep them away from kids and pets.
