Online Dispensary Canada The Healing Co - How To Store Your Cannabis

Most of us take great pride in our stash. We carefully curate our selection of bud based on our preferences, moods and desired effects. We may keep multiple strains on hand to be used in different scenarios. A sedating indica for winding down at the end of the day. An energizing sativa for when we need to be focused and creative. One can never have too many strains!

Cultivating a cannabis collection such as this takes time and money. If you invest in quality cannabis, you want to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. While there is no “expiration date” for cannabis, nothing is as disappointing as realizing your bud has lost its potency or gone moldy.

How do you store your cannabis to ensure it stays fresh? Allow us to share some of our top tricks!

COOL & DARK

When you look out at your lawn in the middle of summer, what do you see? Probably dried up, scorched grass. UV rays can be just as harmful to your cannabis and will degrade the cannabinoids over time. You want to ensure that you are not storing your bud in direct sunlight. Instead, choose a closet or a drawer that is safely away from children and pets.

Storing your cannabis in the dark will also help you to control the temperature, as this is also a key factor for keeping it fresh. Mildew and other molds that can harm your bud thrive in temperatures between 77° and 86° F. Keeping your cannabis stored in a place that is below 70° will keep it safely out of the mildew “danger zone”.

LOW HUMIDITY

Much like temperature, humidity plays a huge role in ensuring your bud doesn’t become moldy. The general consensus is to keep your cannabis under 59% and 63% RH. Too much humidity and you run the risk of mold (again!). If there isn’t enough humidity in the air, you could dry out the trichomes and essential oils.

If you’re at all worried about the humidity of your home, you may look at investing in a Cannador, which is like a humidor for cannabis! It keeps your bud at just the right temperature and humidity level. Do NOT use a traditional tobacco humidor, as most are made from cedar wood which could interfere with the terpene profile of your bud.

USE GLASS

Plastic bags can affect the taste of your bud, are not environmentally friendly and will not effectively hold in the odor, making them a terrible choice for storing your cannabis. You will want to opt for glass! Glass has a neutral charge, can be sealed air tight and will not introduce any other fragrances to your cannabis. Try to find a jar that matches the amount of bud you are going to store; you don’t want to use a giant mason jar if you only have a small amount of cannabis in it, as too much air will get to the bud. Think like Goldie Locks, you want to find a jar that is just the right fit!

STORE SEPARATELY

As we mentioned in the very beginning, many of us have impressive stashes, with multiple strains. As all strains have different terpene profiles, you will want to store them separately so they keep their original flavor. Have a little collection of glass mason jars so you can keep your strains separated!

DO NOT STORE IN FRIDGE OR FREEZER

We’re not sure who first came up with the idea that cannabis should be stored in the fridge or freezer, but they were mistaken. The fluctuating temperatures and humidity of either your fridge or freezer make it a breeding ground for mold and mildew (think about how quickly other organic materials goes moldy in the fridge!). If you value your cannabis, keep it far away from the fridge and/or freezer!

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL

If you take care of your cannabis and store it correctly, it will last you a really, really long time. Be sure to keep your bud in a glass jar, somewhere that is cool and dark, and away from other strains.
