Keeping your children safe is one of the main pillars of being a parent! Just like you keep them away from your alcohol, cleaning products or medication, you must keep your cannabis edibles out of reach and safely tucked away.
As a parent, it is important for you to find a way to enjoy your edibles while also keeping your kids safe. We’re here to help with that! Below are our top four tips on how to safely store your edibles!
The best way to ensure your child doesn’t get into your cannabis edibles is to take preventative measures!
Whether you have purchased your edibles or made them at home, storage is very important. Most edibles can safely be stored in the fridge, unless otherwise stated. Keeping your cannabis infused goodies in a childproof container will put your mind at ease and keep your munchkins safe. Google terms like “fridge safe medicine lock box”, “fridge safe box locker” or “locked lunchbox” to find a variety of options at different price points.
If you are storing your edibles where someone else may find them, be sure to label them clearly so that there is no confusion as to what is being opened. Your label doesn’t have to use words; it can be a symbol that the whole family will understand. You might consider having a designated drawer or shelf in the fridge or cupboard that is specifically for your edibles to ensure they aren’t accidentally ingested.
You might want to consider keeping lower doses edibles at home if there are children around. While we want to avoid your child ingesting any amount of cannabis, a 10mg gummy will be significantly less worrisome than one containing 100mg.
If the conversation is age-appropriate, have it! Consider discussing your cannabis use with your children, why you use it, and why it is important that they do not try it. Or you could explain to them that these treats are only for grown-ups and that they could make kids and pets very sick. Show them what the locked containers look like and ask that they tell you if they ever see one unlocked. Open and honest conversations are one of the best preventative measures you can take as a parent!
As scary as it is when your child eats something they shouldn’t, it doesn’t make you a bad parent. Accidents happen. It is important that you take all of the necessary precautions to avoid that ever happening, but if it does, here is what to do if your kid eats your edibles.
